The Dangers of Stormwater Ponds

Date

As part of the drainage system, stormwater ponds have one job, to reduce the risk of flooding in our neighbourhoods. Even when the ice looks thick, it can be dangerous. Some of the factors that affect the ice quality are:

  •  Stormwater ponds have an inlet and outlet pipe with water flowing much of the year
  • Moving water, fluctuating water levels, and changing water temperatures due to drainage or vegetation leads to unpredictable ice
  • Pollutants and runoff, which may include salt, and brine will impact ice quality and make thickness highly unpredictable and inconsistent
  • Ice conditions can change rapidly

Coaldale & District Emergency Services is advising the public to stay off of stormwater retention ponds – They may look safe once frozen over, but it’s below the surface that makes them dangerous.

The Town of Coaldale will be installing signs at all stormwater ponds warning people to stay off the ice.

If someone falls through the ice, do not go on the ice and try to pull them out... You may fall in too! Get help fast by calling out for help and calling 9-1-1.
