The SHIFT Community Recreation Centre is a modern, 55,000 square-foot multi-purpose community recreation facility that serves as a vibrant hub for sport, fitness and wellness for residents of all ages. It features a variety of amenities including multi-sport courts (basketball, volleyball, badminton, pickleball), an indoor turf field for soccer and lacrosse, a 200-metre indoor walking and running track, a squash court, and a welcoming indoor play structure.

The Centre also includes a fully equipped fitness area operated privately by Twisted Steel Fitness as well as childcare space operated privately by BGC Southern Alberta.

1. What is the combined membership option?
The combined membership option offers members access to both the Town of Coaldale’s facilities (Sport Court, Fieldhouse, Play Structure and Squash Court) and Twisted Steel Fitness Centre’s at the Shift Community Recreation Centre. This membership option provides a comprehensive fitness package at a competitive price.
2. What are the benefits of the combined membership?
With the combined membership, you get:
- Full access to Town of Coaldale’s recreation facilities.
- Access to Twisted Steel’s weight training, cardio machines, and amenities
- A single membership at a lower price than purchasing two separate memberships. (23% discount)
- Flexible use of both facilities, allowing you to choose the activities that suit you best.
3. What is the cost of the combined membership?
• Adult Membership: $78.50 per month
• Youth/Teen/Student Membership: $63.00 per month This pricing offers better value than purchasing individual memberships for each facility.
4. Who can purchase the combined membership?
The combined membership is available to adults, youth, teens, and students. The age restrictions for Twisted Steel are, 12+ with supervision or 14+ to workout on your own.
5. What are the payment terms of the membership?
Currently, we are not set up for recurring payments. The combined membership will be paid on a month-to-month basis. However, we are actively working on implementing a more convenient recurring payment option in the near future.
6. When will the combined membership be available?
The combined membership will be available starting October 1, 2024 on a Monthly (NON REOCCURRING) payment.
7. How do I sign up for the combined membership?
You can sign up at the front desk of the Shift Community Recreation Centre .
8. What happens to my existing membership?
If you currently have a membership with either the Town of Coaldale or Twisted Steel, you can choose to upgrade to the combined membership. Speak to the staff at either location to assist you with the transition.
9. What if I don’t want the combined membership?
The combined membership is an optional offer. If you prefer, you can continue to purchase separate memberships for the Town of Coaldale’s facilities or Twisted Steel Fitness Centre as you currently do.
10. How will this affect facility usage or class bookings?
Facility usage and class bookings will remain largely the same. However, the combined membership gives you more options.
11. How will my membership fee be used?
Your membership fee will be shared between the Town of Coaldale and Twisted Steel to ensure that both parties can maintain and improve their facilities and services. This partnership helps keep membership fees affordable while providing top-tier fitness and recreation options.
12. Are there any special offers or discounts for families or couples?
Currently, the combined membership pricing applies to individuals. However, special packages or discounts may be introduced in the future. Keep an eye out for updates on this.
13. How will this combined membership impact the community?

For residents in financial need, the Town of Coaldale offers a 50% discount on all memberships at the Shift Community Recreation Centre for residents of Coaldale and Lethbridge County (excluding City of Lethbridge residents). The subsidy applies to individual and family memberships and for all age groups at the Shift Community Recreation Centre. Please note that the subsidy does not include drop-in programming or memberships to Twisted Steel Fitness.
Who can participate in this program?
Residents of Coaldale and Lethbridge County who meet the eligibility criteria based on Revenue Canada’s Income Threshold and the number of people living in their household can apply for the subsidy. The Revenue Canada’s Income Threshold considers both your household income and the number of people living in your household. This information will be reviewed by FCSS when you submit your application.
If the total annual income (line 236) for all adults listed in the household is under the following totals, you are eligible for this program:
Family Size Total Family Income 1 $35,000 2 $45,000 3 $47,500 4 $50,000 5 $52,500 6 $55,000 7 $57,500 Applicants will need to provide supporting documents that verify Household Income and Residency. Documentation is required for each person living in the household.
You will need to show:
Photo ID – drivers license, other photo ID
Proof of where you live (one of the following) - property tax bill, utility bill, bank statement, dated within the last 60 days. If you are unable to provide any of those, a letter from person of authority (church leader, school principal, registered social worker) can be provided to confirm your place of residence.
Proof of income (one of the following)- Notice of Assessment from the most recent tax year for all adults listed on the application form, two most recent pay stubs or bank statements, Alberta Health Benefits Card or Alberta Income Support Summary.

Step 1 - Complete the Fee Assistance Program application form. Form can also be completed in person.
Step 2 - Phone or text (587) 370-8518 to book an intake appointment. Leave a message, if prompted.
Step 3 - Bring the required residency and income verification documents with your completed application form.
Step 4 - Approved applicants will receive a letter confirming their eligibility for the fee assistance program to take to the town when registering for programs.

What happens after my application is approved?
Once your application is approved, you will receive an approval letter from FCSS. You can take this letter to the Shift Community Recreation Centre to receive your 50% discount on your membership.Can I apply for multiple family members who live in my household?
Yes, the subsidy applies to all ages, and multiple family members living in the same home can apply as long as the household meets the eligibility requirements determined above.
What types of memberships are eligible for the subsidy?
The subsidy applies to individual and family memberships and for all age groups at the Shift Community Recreation Centre. Please note that the subsidy does not include drop-in programming or memberships to Twisted Steel Fitness.Is there a deadline to apply for the subsidy?
There is no specific deadline, but we recommend applying as early as possible to ensure you receive the subsidy for your membership at the Shift Community Recreation Centre.How long is the subsidy valid for?
The 50% discount applies at the time of membership registration at the Shift Community Recreation Centre. The duration of your membership will be one year from your approval date and depend on the type of membership you choose (monthly, yearly, etc.). After one year, your subsidy approval from FCSS will expire, and therefore you must reapply. For example, if you were approved on November 13, 2024, you could purchase a month membership every month at a 50% discount until November 13, 2025. Your membership will no longer work on November 14, 2025, and you must therefore reapply for the subsidy.Where can I get the registration form?
A paper copy of the registration form can be obtained from Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) and the Shift Community Recreation Centre. You can either pick it up in person or download it here: Fee Assistance Program application form .
Where do I submit my application?
Completed applications, along with all required documents, must be submitted to Family and Community Support Services (FCSS). They will review the information and notify you of approval.What if my application is denied?

The Indoor Batting Cage, located within the Fieldhouse at the SHIFT Community Recreation Centre, offers a safe, indoor space for baseball and softball practice. Twisted Steel Fitness is a locally operated fitness facility located within the SHIFT Community Recreation Centre. The gym offers a wide range of strength and conditioning equipment, including powerlifting racks, barbells, free weights, resistance machines, and cardio equipment. The space also features functional training tools such as kettlebells, sleds, and battle ropes, supporting a variety of training styles for both beginner and experienced members.
