During their Regular Council Meeting of May 12th, 2020, Coaldale Town Council reviewed the schematic design concept proposal for the Town’s new multi-use recreation centre. The design concept was presented by the Town’s and Palliser School’s joint architectural design consultant, FWBA Architects, and was the product of feedback collected from the community, as well as consultation with the Sport and Recreation Working Group and local businesses who have expressed interest in partnership opportunities within the new space.
Highlights from the design include amenities such as an indoor playground, climbing wall, fitness centre and track, and a multi-use court with the ability to accommodate several different types of activities, such as batting cages, which can be observed in the images below. There is also a large amount of space dedicated to flexible breakout rooms that can be used for a variety of events and festivities.
Following the presentation, Council expressed their satisfaction with the preliminary design concepts, citing that the designs had met their anticipated project outcomes. A motion was made to authorize the design consultant to proceed with the detailed design phase of the project, which would include a more detailed site plan as well as providing a more accurate breakdown of the forecasted building and operating costs for the facility.
“We are happy to see that the preliminary designs were able to echo the community’s feedback from our many engagement sessions last fall,” says Mayor Kim Craig. “Council is eager move forward with the detailed design phase of this project. We are also excited that our design team had the forethought to include revenue-generating commercial space within the facility to create as many win-wins as possible.”
Throughout the detailed design process, Council will have several opportunities to make any changes and adjustments to the plan as necessary to fit within the budget for the project. By proceeding to the detailed design phase, the Town will be well-positioned to respond to the Province’s call for shovel-ready projects later in the year.
While a detailed cost breakdown of the project is not yet known in this early stage of the design process, proceeding to the detailed design phase will enable the design consultants to provide a more refined cost projection, both from a capital and operating cost perspective.
“With the economic turmoil the world has found itself in, we hope the Town sees the progress made on this project as a clear sign of growth and resurgence,” says Craig. “Town Council has made a clear commitment to carry forward with its ambitious 2020 capital budget as part of our Town’s contribution towards the economic recovery of our region.”
