Coaldale Community Mosaic Community Art Project

The Gem of the West Museum Arts and Culture Committee and the Town of Coaldale are partnering to host Centennial Fall Friday Featuring the Coaldale Centennial Mosaic Community Art Project – a project that has been made possible by a grant from the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta.

We have been working with Mosaic Canada Murals who have consulted with us and have designed a mural that defines Coaldale’s history and its citizens (the design will remain a secret until after the mural is complete).  The mural is made up of over 600 individual 4” x 4” aluminum tiles that when positioned together, create a large 8’ x 12’ work of art that will depict Coaldale and will be a lasting legacy of Coaldale’s 100th Anniversary.  Each individual tile will be painted by a member of the community and can be a toddler’s scribbles to professional artwork.

Be a part of Coaldale’s story:

We would like to invite you, members of the community, to leave your mark by creating a painting that represents what Coaldale means to you on a 4”x4” tile.  Every painting will be a story and will become a piece of a much bigger story – the final finished mural.  The completed tiles created by you, your family and the rest of the community will be assembled into a large mural grid, magically transforming the individual paintings into a unified mosaic that will tell the story of Coaldale.  Your personal artwork will be on display for decades to come.  Visit to see examples of some of the amazing mosaics from other Canadian towns and cities.

 Celebrate with your Community:

Millennium Park will be home to carnival games and food from 1pm – 8:30pm on Friday, September 27.  Celebrate with our local community groups while supporting them by purchasing carnival food and joining them for family games throughout the afternoon.  The Gem of the West Arts & Culture Committee’s final Flea Market Friday will be taking place in the Curling Rink parking lot and food trucks will be on site.

Saturday morning kicks off with a free pancake breakfast Powered by Telus, the Gem of the West Museum Society and the Town of Coaldale from 9am -11am at the Community Centre.  Come for breakfast before creating your masterpiece on your mosaic tile.

 Reserve your tile:

Painting sessions will be led by the very talented professional artists of Mosaic Canada Murals and will be approximately 1 hour in length.  Several sessions have been scheduled for Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28 at the HUB Community Building.  All you need to do to become a part of Coaldale’s story is to book your spot by visiting Eventbrite, express what Coaldale means to you through your painting and then become a part of Coaldale’s history.

Space is limited so book your spot today!
