A self proclaimed ‘small-town boy,’ Councillor Martens has been a mainstay in the Coaldale community, serving on Council for 27 years. Born and raised in Coaldale, Bill has a breadth of experience and offers a long-range perspective. He says one of the best things about being on Council is that it provides an opportunity to give back to a community which has been very good to him.
For many years Bill owned and operated a local hardware store — a store run, before him, by both his father and grandfather. While Bill’s kids were growing up, he coached minor hockey and Little League baseball. His recreational interests translated into politics where Bill has served on various recreation boards and organizations. He has always been especially passionate about improving the quality of life for seniors. Serving on the board of the Green Acres organization for a number of years, he developed a real passion for improving service levels for elderly people in need.
Retired from the day-to-day of the hardware store, when Bill’s not working on Council-related matters he spends his spare time with family and enjoys skiing, water-skiing, hiking, golfing, fishing, and walking. In his younger years, Bill was a big-game hunter.
