Tender awarded for Coaldale RCMP Detachment building

There will soon be a flurry of activity on the east side of Coaldale. The Town of Coaldale is pleased to report the tender for the construction of the Coaldale RCMP Detachment has been awarded.

According to the Government of Canada’s tendering website, the tender for the much-anticipated construction project was awarded to Pomerleau Inc. out of Calgary, Alberta, with a construction tender of $11,655,000.

To commemorate the start of this construction project, the Town of Coaldale and the Coaldale RCMP Detachment will be co-hosting a ground-breaking ceremony at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 10 at the building site at the corner of 19A Avenue and 8 Street, just off of Highway 3 on the east edge of Coaldale.

The RCMP began policing Coaldale in January of 2016 under a new municipal policing contract. Plans at that time included the construction of a new detachment building to not only house the Coaldale Detachment but also provide facilities for regional policing services.

For the past three years the Coaldale Detachment has been operating out of a portion of the Coaldale Town Office which was renovated and retrofitted to serve this purpose.

Mayor Kim Craig says he is delighted the construction project for the new detachment building will soon begin in Coaldale.

“We couldn’t be more delighted to see this project moving ahead,” said Mayor Kim Craig.

“Council is super excited to have the contract awarded for the Coaldale RCMP Detachment building and to see construction start in earnest.”

“Construction of the detachment facility has certainly been a project the community has been looking forward to watching roll out in Coaldale,” said Craig.

The new facility will not only add to Coaldale’s overall enhanced emergency services but will also provide the RCMP with a more accessible regional facility in this part of southern Alberta.

The new facility will be home-base for the Coaldale RCMP Detachment which includes 17 full-time RCMP members and 5 administrative staff. The Coaldale RCMP building will also house various RCMP support sections including a regional traffic unit, police service dog, forensic identification unit, firearms officers and other specialized support RCMP staff.

“The Coaldale RCMP are pleased to be taking the next step in having the police detachment built. We look forward to it’s completion,” said Staff Sgt. Glenn Henry.
